Delft Tiles have been made at Delft, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Makkam etc. in Nothern Netherland. It was a buiding material and
utilized to decorate walls and to maintain the sanitation in a house. When you look at 17th century Dutch painting, you can see how tiles were used inside a house.
For example, Johanness Vermeer depicted tiles at the bottom of wall in his " the Milkmaid".
Delft Tiles were originated in the late 1500s and they are still made as a souvenir mainly. Delft Tiles are very fascinating with its various decors: animal,
flower, landscape, war ship/boat, soldier, bible theme(biblical), child's play, citizen and so on. In particular, decor of child's playing and citizen's occupation
could remind us of the daily life of Dutch people in 16th, 17th and 18th century vividly.
A decor is handpainted and there are three kinds of coloring: Blue and white, Manganese(purple-brown) and Polychrome. In many decors, design itself is simply patterned and it is not
so much sophisticated, however which is rather attractive. In a sense, Delft Tiles would be similar to Japanese Imari porcelains.
Another characteristics of Delft Tiles are that there are various kinds of corner motiefs: Ox head, Spider, Leaf etc. and their variations. Once tiles are plastered on wall, a corner motief generates different pictures through combinations with other tiles, which makes Delft Tile further attractive.
